Hello, friends and parents of a teen,
It’s been a great summer for recreation with lots of hot dry weather. We pray for our farmers, but it’s been a long time since we’ve experienced a summer quite so favorable to outdoor activities. Of course, I’m also thankful for my A/C!
About this time every year excitement starts to build as another year of youth ministry begins. As it approaches it seems the best way to get started is to communicate. The what, where, when and how will begin to be defined below. But what about the why?
Great things are discovered Underground!
Underground Youth, which will be simply called, Underground is a community youth ministry that exists to call all youth to follow Jesus Christ completely. Why? Because Jesus is actually the way. How can we believe what Jesus said about Himself? We’ve yet to find any other faith practice that offers forgiveness, healing, restoration and empowerment to live in a world with so many struggles, including the struggle to find the truth.
Underground is for any student in 7-12 grade. The time is from 6-7:30 pm on Wednesday evenings at First English located at 17 Main St NW Menahga. Underground is where we also meet. The room below the sanctuary has been and continues to be renovated and updated specifically for teen gatherings.
What can you expect from our team? Underground is led by Pastor Jim Hallaway with the help of Karen Kocurek. We strive to provide a place for students to gather, learn about God-family-community-service as well as real life topics the students want to discuss. If you are interested in helping there are many ways to serve with one time or ongoing commitment.
Teens are welcome. Their friends are welcome.
Underground will meet from October 6th until April 27th. We are hosting a parent gathering on September 26th at 6:30 in which we will give a tour, share some dessert, give out a preliminary calendar, answer questions and most importantly, get to know one another!
Students with special needs are welcome too! Pastor Jim is happy to meet with you and see how Underground can be a great experience for your teen. Students must be able to navigate stairs or have a plan to navigate stairs. We do have a handicap-accessible bathroom.
In addition to Underground there are two other opportunities for your teen. We offer confirmation also on Wednesdays. This group meets at 4 pm until 5. We provide supper for the group and a leader is present at all times. The other opportunity is a group for high school students. It is a biblical foundations class that meets at Pastor Jim’s, the parsonage. The biblical foundations gathering is of a more serious nature and encourages movement toward adult responsibility concerning faith and life.
You can look forward to more info at our parent meet and greet on September 26th at 6:30 pm here at First English! We look forward to meeting you!
